Zabury Chimwanda is one of the founders of the Tingatinga Cooperative in 1990. He has been painting for more than 40 years and his teacher was Omary Amonde. Mzee Chimwanda was born in Nakapanya in 1947 but soon he has moved to Dar es Salaam where he started to paint. He is living in Msasani with his wife and children. Three of the children are painters also: Salum Zaburi, Zachi Chimwanda and Rajabu Chimwanda (called Roger). He has exhibitied in UK in 1993 together with Makonde sculptors like Salum Chuma and Njawike. His paintings are used in a number of publications. The painting used for the memo game depicts three birds and a snake - a motive inspired by his village. |
